Since opening in September 2012, we’ve been passionate about serving Edinburgh outstanding single origin espresso and filter coffees using beans from the best roasters around the UK and Europe, alongside high quality artisan food with local provenance. We care about communicating knowledge to our customers, sparking an interest in what we do and ensuring each and every customer has an experience that exceeds their expectations.

We have a dedicated, down to earth and friendly team of full-time and part-time staff and we are looking for new members to join us as we look towards expanding.

Temporary full-time Barista for BBC@Potterrow at the Edinburgh Fringe 

Last year we operated a pop-up espresso bar at the BBC@Potterrow venue during the Fringe. We will be doing the same thing again this August and we’re looking for talented baristas to join us during the Festival month. You should be available to work full-time from 1st – 25th August 2014. We will consider applicants who are interested in working for a week at a time, or for the whole three week stretch.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing espresso and brewed coffee to Brew Lab’s exacting standards.
  • Engaging with customers and communicating Brew Lab’s speciality coffee offering to an eclectic customer base.
  • Representing Brew Lab and ensuring every customer has the very best experience possible.
  • Ensuring Brew Lab’s high standards of cleanliness, organisation and efficiency are maintained at all times.

We’re looking for someone who can tick the following boxes:

  • Ideally you will have at least two years of experience in speciality coffee.
  • You should be able to demonstrate a clear passion and knowledge for coffee, food and a desire to consistently exceed customer expectations.
  • You should be comfortable working on a manual machine with grind-on-demand grinders and be proficient at dialling in to ensure the espresso is consistently at its best.
  • Texturing milk should be second nature and you should be consistently capable of pouring excellent latte art.
  • You should have an exceptional attention to detail as well as excellent organisational and efficiency skills.
  • The BBC@Potterrow venue receives a wide variety of customers, many of whom have never come across speciality coffee before. You will be an excellent communicator and be comfortable conveying to customers the intricacies of coffee in an easy to understand and accessible way.

Part-time floor staff member

We’re looking for a dedicated part-time floor staff member to join our team.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Serving drinks to customers, clearing the coffee shop floor and washing dishes.
  • Maintaining Brew Lab’s high standards of cleanliness, organisation and efficiency.
  • Communicating Brew Lab’s speciality coffee offering to customers in a clear and accessible way.
  • Cash handling.
  • Operating the brew bar and making brewed coffee and tea to Brew Lab’s exacting standards.
  • Food preparation including making sandwiches.

You should be able to tick the following boxes:

  • You will have at least two years of experience in the hospitality industry either in a cafe or restaurant.
  • Your customer service and communication skills should be second to none.
  • You should have a keen interest in food and drink.
  • Experience in coffee is not essential, but you should have a desire to learn more about speciality coffee.
  • You should have an exceptional attention to detail as well as excellent organisational and efficiency skills.
  • You should be a good multi-tasker and happy with working in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
